Nigerians Will Celebrate Tinubu for Fuel Subsidy Removal — Reps Deputy Spokesman Agbese

 

...Urges Organised Labour to Give Dialogue a Chance 

The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Dr Philip Agbese, has assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu's removal of fuel subsidy is in their best interest. 

Agbese, the member representing Ado/ Okpokwu/ Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, spoke to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja. 

The lawmaker admitted that fuel subsidy has been a part of the nation since the 1970s, with the government routinely selling petrol to citizens at below cost to minimize the impact of rising global oil prices. 

However, he noted that the outlay of subsidizing petrol has ballooned over time, adding that the regime has made a few richer. 

Agbese said that available figures showed that the Buhari administration (2015 -2023) paid a subsidy of over N11.4 trillion, more than what the government spent on education, health, and infrastructure during the period under review.

While acknowledging that President Tinubu's decision to end the regime has come with hardship, he reckons that Nigerians will celebrate in the long run. 

According to him, fuel subsidy constitutes 50% of the nation's problem and its termination will usher the country to her glorious era in history.

He, however, urged Organised Labour not to succumb to agents of destabilization, assuring that the resources saved from the policy would be channelled to developmental programs. 

"President Tinubu must be commended for taking the bold step to save the future of our nation. Fuel subsidy was no longer attainable," he said. 

"It is on record that about N40.1 billion is spent daily to subsidize every liter of petrol consumed in Nigeria by at least N600. It means the government spends about N1.24 trillion on fuel subsidies monthly. 

"The country is in massive debt and would need more money to subsidize fuel. According to the World Bank, the government is projected to achieve fiscal savings of approximately two trillion naira ($2.6 billion) in 2023, equivalent to 0.9% of GDP. These savings are expected to reach over 11 trillion naira ($14.3bn) by the end of 2025.

"This will be invested in healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Indeed, the advantages of the removal of subsidy would not just come up immediately. It is not possible because the economy is not strong. We don’t have money to start implementing measures that will ameliorate the removal of the subsidy. 

"However, we must look beyond the present. The future of our great nation is at stake. I want to commend President Tinubu for this brave decision. In a matter of time, Nigerians will smile.

"Let me also use this opportunity to appeal to the Organised Labour not to succumb to agents of destabilization who want to pull us back. The issue of palliatives and better welfare for all citizens is paramount before the Asiwaju government. 

"Our nation can not withstand another mass action. We are trying to build not destroy. The Labour should, therefore, give dialogue a chance and at least be patient with this administration. It is still early days".

I will like to state here categorically that the entire 8 years rule of Buhari I supported only one policy and that is Executive Order 10 signed in May 2020 by President Muhammadu Buhari which outrightly granted financial and administrative autonomy to State legislature, judiciary as well as the local government authority as the third tier of government in Nigeria, I see this as the right step to free the local government councils and give them the needed independence and the Judicial authority not seeing beyond the need of themselves truncated that process because Almighty Nigerian Governors like WIKE were against the survival and elimination of obstacles militating against the independence of these critical parts of our country’s democratic system.

We should all be concerned about the status and happenings within the Local Government System in Nigeria, it is now a notorious fact that it has been hijacked by the Nigerian Governors and I will want to state emphatically that I will totally support any collaborative efforts in the direction of working with National assembly (10th Assembly) to carry out constitutional amendment that will lead to the granting of full financial and Electoral autonomy to the Local Government System and Administration in Nigeria, because I can say this without mincing words that the presumed failure or the inability of the Local councils to drive and bring about development in Nigeria to a glaring point that could have positive impact on the lives of ordinary Nigerians can easily be attributed to the total lack of Local government election and financial autonomy because most of these local government administrators are imposed on the people, we naturally can't hold them accountable, no matter the laudable program(s) of any administration at the Federal level without corresponding efforts at the Local Government level, all will amount to little or no impact in the life of the Nigerian people. 

These Governors act with reckless impunity against elected Local Government Chairmen, suspend them at will in contravention to all relevant laws and statues, ( imagine what the local government Chairman that dared to question the Governor of Ogun state about how the State and local joint account was been mismanaged) The current law as regards the administration of our Local Government System no longer serves the interest of the Nigerian people and must be urgently reviewed to save and promote effective Local Council System as expected in every democratic presidential system. One of the major functions of duly elected councilors is to make bye laws for the good governance and development of all Local Government areas across Nigeria but as I write this article to state that my emphasis are not misplaced and the importance of local government autonomy should never be ignored or underestimated and the reason why voter apathy persist in local elections is because elections at that level are totally manipulated to ensure that the governor’s Party record is 100% victory and constitutionally assigned functions of local government officials has been greatly eroded by the excessive interference and impunity of our Governors. 

All the above have in a great way contributed to voter apathy because without transparency there is no legitimacy and without legitimacy there is no trust.

I must say without mincing words that the state Independent electoral Commission is the greatest democratic fraud foisted on our electoral democracy and that is the major reason I have come to the undeniable conclusion that it is important that the conduct of Local Government elections becomes the responsibilities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) or we collectively work to enact and overhaul the laws that governs the affairs of State Independent Electoral Commission (SIECS) because from the attitude and conduct of state elections by all States Independent Electoral Commissions (SIEC's) it is impossible to get a free, fair and credible election under the existing arrangement. The current system encourages massive rigging because SIEC's are under the wings and caprices of the State Governors WHO uses the State Assembly to manipulate the conduct of the elections in favour of his own Political Party and no exception across Nigeria. As I have seen over the years, how Parties that control the state will stop at nothing to fraudulently tailor the results of local government elections in their favour. You will also discover that all Local Government election conducted in States are won by the Party in power in each respective states under review; the opposition party in the state is always left with nothing. If Local authorities have autonomy and tenure their guaranteed, it will be easy for the people to hold them accountable and this will in turn bring development closer to the people and does make for a robust democracy. 

What is going on at the Local Government level in Nigeria is a mockery of democracy, there is urgent need for all stakeholders (Media, Political Parties, Critical election stakeholders) to work together purposefully to establish the needed environment for good governance to grow and save our people from bad leadership. 

The State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) is the greatest electoral abracadabra (the more you look, the more you see nothing positive) imposed on our electoral Representative democracy and my appeal to all lawmakers is to work and use moral persuasion to birth a new effective administrative system for the Local Government tier in Nigeria, if by your commitment to rescue our people from this electoral rascality and by so doing if any governor feels aggrieved or seem to be more interested in Funds meant for the local government councils, let him resign and contest as LOCAL government Chairman and he or she should be assured of the support of all Nigerians. The bottom-line of my unrelenting Advocacy for a free, fair and credible electoral and management process is to draw the attention of all sundry to the fraudulent means of conducting our Local government elections Nigerian.

it is possible for other Political Parties to win Local Government elections if it is conducted under the right conditions of Free, fair and credible electoral atmosphere.

We can not continue with this charade called elections because that is why we now have MORIBUND local Government councils in Nigeria, There is no need deceiving ourselves by calling the charades elections. It should rather be called selection/imposition process and the governors should stop wasting tax payers monies conducting such sham of election because nowhere in the world the ruling government in the state will cruise away to victory with 99.99% contested seats.

If we cannot have free and fair elections at the LGA level, they rather adopt the selection method and save our funds and put it into more productive use like road construction, Schools and Hospitals. Just select your preferred candidates then announce winners and stop wasting taxpayers money. We go still accept the outcome of the process. We no get choice until the constitution is amended.

Amendment for the Local Government administration and elections laws can not be handled that easily because you need 2/3 of the State assemblies to endorse such amendments even if passed by the National Assembly and with the State assemblies practically in the pockets of the state Governors, it will not pass the approval test.

Local Government election is food for the boys of the Governor. it is the affirmation of the governors will and power. Na who dem approve dey win and na only the Party way the govern the state the fit win for local government elections. 

States will not be arm twisted by the State Governors if we have free local Government election system in Nigeria.

We must place our focus on State to take over State assemblies or do something legally that can free the Local Government elections from the whims and caprices of the state emperors.

Manipulated and rigged Elections has the potential to contribute to voter apathy because without transparency there is no Trust and without Trust there is no legitimacy .

Recommendations:

STATES INDEPENDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSION

• Section 7 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) relating to the place of Local Governments as the third tier of government should be amended to specifically guarantee the existence, establishment, structure, composition, finance, functions and tenure of Local Governments under the Constitution. 

•Section 153, 197 and the third Schedule to the Constitution should be amended to provide for the following re-designation and re-ordering of States Independent Electoral Commission: 

JOINT STATE/LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACCOUNT

• Section 162(5)-(7) of the Constitution should be amended to abolish the Joint State/Local Government Account.

•Section 162(5)-(7) of the Constitution should be further amended to provide that any amount standing to the credit of the Local Government Councils in the Federation Account should be paid directly to the various Local Governments.

•I also call for a robust National Electoral Reform conference.

CSOs Berate NLC, TUC Over Insistence on Indefinite Strike Action

 

_...says move highly unpatriotic and targeted at destabilising Nigeria_ 

The insistence of organised labour to embark on an indefinite strike action has continued to attract widespread criticism, with the latest coming from the Civil Society Situation Room on Good Governance in Nigeria (CSSRGGN). 

The group condemned the move by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) as highly unpatriotic and aimed to destabilise the country. 

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, Dr. Thomas Uzah, National President/Convener, said the organised labour is bent on bringing the government down through street protests. 

Uzah said the NLC and TUC's obsession with mass action over dialogue despite calls from different quarters clearly shows that there is a hidden agenda. 

"We hope that the leaders of organized labour fully appreciate the crimes they are committing with the sets of directives they have issued and that they also understand that they will invariably lose control of the mayhem they are trying to unleash on the country," he added. 

"We are therefore calling on Nigerians and the rest of the world to note that the NLC and TUC are preparing the citizenry for war, they are preparing the country for final implosion. We further ask the discerning to note that the opposition and their foreign collaborators are bankrolling NLC and TUC to bring the government down. 

"We hereby issue another advisory that the opposition, NLC, and TUC have perfected plans to grow their street protests and rallies into full-blown war by stagging or orchestrating attacks on protesters by fake security operatives so that they can accuse the government of being heavy-handed and attempt to delegitimize the government before the international community of being repressive. 

"We are worried about how this dangerous plot will play out given the other security challenges that the country is already battling with. There is the obvious danger of how this could worsen banditry, kidnap for ransom, and separatist elements that have in the past used mass protests as an opportunity to plant new cells in areas where they do not hitherto exist.

"The Civil Society Situation Room on Good Governance In Nigeria therefore urges security agencies to take proactive steps to prevent the catastrophe that NLC and TUC have plotted for the country. 

"We renew our appeal to the Federal Government to look beyond the NLC and TUC. The government should increase and accelerate the implementation of its palliative measures for Nigerians. "

Before We Crucify Hon Gbajabiamila

What is grace? This is a question that I have been battling with for a while. I have looked at some of the recent happenings in the country concerning some individuals, and one of them is the Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to the President. 

Gbaja as he is fondly called could pass for a man with nine lives. He has been around for a while. He has had his share of good, bad, and ugly times. He has been accused, and he has been commended. Interestingly, he kept his cool in all these, and grace continued to work for him. 

I recall that in the 8th Assembly, he aspired to be the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He worked hard but didn't get it. He didn't despair. He was loyal and waited for his turn. And guess what? Grace turned up for him. He was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 9th Assembly, and those who worked against him went on their knees seeking forgiveness and patronage. 

He was calm as usual and did what he knew how to do best. He was on top of his game. I recall an incident in the twilight of his tenure as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The Deputy Speaker challenged his grace, and the rest is history. 

He served out his term successfully, and another assignment came calling. This time around, the opposition was fierce. Many thought his grace was over, and they rejoiced. They sang to the high heavens, dancing to the imminent fall from grace of Femi Gbajabiamila. 

But grace turned up again. He smiled and moved on. He was appointed the Chief of Staff to the President. Those who felt he would be a hard nut to crack in their desire to call the shots within the presidency went to work. But they failed. And they didn't stop. 

It is an era of slander and blackmail. They churned out invective against him. He was to blame for everything that emanated from the presidency. They went as far as insinuating issues that only existed in their imaginations. All was geared towards making the President uncomfortable with him and ultimately showing him the way out. 

But they forgot that when grace speaks, protocols are suspended. And indeed, the grace has been sufficient for Femi Gbajabiamila. I do not envy him, but I salute his mien and ability to stay calm. That is one of the qualities that endeared him to the President. 

You can't predict his next move. He keeps you guessing until you run out of steam. He allows you to exhaust your arsenal, no matter how dangerous. It is a very risky enterprise, but it has worked for him and is still working. 

Femi Gbajabiamila reminds me of the phrase, "Touch not my anointed. Maybe he is the anointed one. Perhaps the chosen one or the special one. Whichever you choose, you are right. Love him or hate him; he stands tall at all times. 

Very brilliant and analytical. He smiles at you even when he is supposed to wear a frown. He encourages you to do more. What a daring person. But he watches you closely with the eyes on the eagle. I wonder what runs through his mind when he comes under mindless attacks from some vested interest. 

Does he blink in his closet? I doubt it because his composure does not give him away. Someone said Femi Gbajabiamila is an enigma that is worth studying. Someone also said he waits for you at the end of the road to welcome you from your vicious journey. If you are lucky, he will offer you a bottle of water. Would your conscience allow you to drink the water? Only those in that boat can answer the question. 

What sort of grace does Femi Gbajabiamila exude? The grace that beats human understanding. The grace that runs faster than the speed of lightning. The grace that strikes like a thief in the night. The grace that is confusing to the human eyes, and the grace that warns you to retrace your steps in the slander and blackmail enterprise. 

A word is enough for the wise. What is his offense that some want his head? For being a gentleman and a leadership guru or a political strategist? The former number four man in the leadership hierarchy of the country is not mediocre, and one that does not play to the gallery. 

He has seen it all in leadership, and when some allegations are made against him, it only smacks of mockery of commonsense. Most times, these allegations need to be better thought out. The promoters are always in haste and, in the process, make a mess of themselves. 

Before we crucify Femi Gbajabiamila, let us pause and think it through. He is a patriot who is devoted to his principal and the country. He has demonstrated capacity and love for the country. You don't have to like him. But commonsense would suffice that the grace of God surrounds some individuals. Femi Gbajabiamila is one, and let those with ears hear this—my two cents.

Taiwo Oludotun: Impacting Lives with Philanthropic Gestures

 

A search on Google, Wikipedia or, even the Encyclopaedia Britannica, if you want do an advanced search will tell you that philanthropy “derives from the ancient Greek phrase ‘phylantropia,’ meaning ‘to love people’.

Today, the concept of philanthropy includes the act of voluntary giving by individuals or groups to promote the common good. Sometimes, certain levels of giving is referred to as charity and there is a good number of people everywhere that give a lot of charity to a huge of people around them.

A recent study concluded that Microsoft’s Bill Gates was number one on the list of the world’s top philanthropists with $27 billion in lifetime donations, followed by Warren Buffet with $21 billion, George Soros at $8 billion, Azim Premji, the Indian-American of Wipro, $8 billion down to Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg.

In Nigeria, Wealth writers agree that Aliko Dangote. Rochas Okorocha, Tony Elumelu, Jim Ovia, Theophilus Danjuma, Emeka Ofor and Oba Otudeko in this particular order are among top philanthropists in Nigeria. How much each of the above Nigerian free givers has given out over time is, however, not known or documented.

Yet, there are hundreds more Nigerian philanthropists that remain anonymous and will never reveal the extent of their giving to several causes and charities. For instance, Engineer Taiwo Oludotun who is so passionate about his people and their development has poured millions of naira into his community’s development, to the point that his community in Abeokuta North Local Government in Ogun central district of the Gateway state has witnessed a huge transformation from a totally inconsequential community to a giant, well-developed town. 

Recently, he taught it expedient to give the primary 1—6 pupils free holiday coaching to improve their knowledge and understanding of what they will eventually be taught in school whenever they resume back to their various schools of study.

The free holiday coaching to the pupils will prepared them towards their school curriculum and fasten their knowledge in their various departments.

This level of philanthropy is totally unknown not only in this part of the world but even worldwide. For a man or woman to take up the facilitation of infrastructure – roads, bridges, primary and secondary schools, churches of different denominations for his own people is probably the height of giving.

This has not included the number of people he has rekindled their hope in futhering their studies through scholarship scheme, Notable also is the fact that many of those that have benefited from his largesse are not necessarily his relations.

If you witness how he bring relief to people in need you will begin to ask yourself, is this man a Nigerian? Due to his golden heart of giving back to the society. 

Engineer Taiwo Oludotun's huge charitable giving is extraordinary and certainly dwarfs that of other philanthropists in this part of the world. His philanthropy gesture has earned him hundreds of awards from groups, associations in a way of encouragement to do more. 

“I never contemplated this idea of politics when I began caring for my peoples’ welfare, but I was just interested in developing the place and by extension, the whole Ogun state populace and Nigeria ultimately”, Some of my friends and associate do ask me question about venturing into murky water of politics in Nigeria “ Up till this moment, many of my friends always wondered why I am venturing into the murky waters of Nigerian politics, but I believe that if good people abstain from the affairs of the land, there will be no future for our children, particularly the unborn who could be left with no meaningful future in the years ahead.” he said.

Engineer Taiwo Oludotun feels that he cannot sit idly by when his people are enveloped in misery and severe poverty while God has made the kind of provisions he gave him. He said that he cannot wallow in wealth while the bulk of his people are wallowing in poverty, adding, “For God has given me more than I need for my immediate and extended family members and it was only fair that I distributed the huge extras for the welfare of my people.”

In the nearest future, if mandate is given to Engineer Taiwo Oludotun, he will boost his philanthropy gesture through increase in welfare projects that will ease people of his community and beyond. 

His recent representation as commissioner for rural development has further widen his idea in the area of development in each and every area of Ogun state. Also, he served meritoriously as the honorable commissioner of forestry where he made sure our reserve is protected and aforestation of trees are implemented to avoid future dangers.

Reps Deputy Spokesperson, Hon Agbese Bags Prestigious Doctorate Award From Weldios University

 

A philanthropist and Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has bagged the prestigious Weldios University Honorary Doctorate Degree (PhD Honoraris Causa) in Political Leadership. 

The award was bestowed on him at a the second edition of the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) and Weldios University annual Symposium held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre Abuja on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. 

The Member of the 10th House of Representatives, representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency at National Assembly, is popularly known as "Okanga Agila", and a young Nigerian politician and humanitarian. 

In his acceptance speech, the Reps member said that the award will spur him to do more for the society and for the young people of Nigeria. 

He described the award as an opportunity to rededicate himself to the service of God humanity. 

He said, “I believe that as much as I cherish this Honourary Doctorate Award today, I'm going to continue to do everything humanly possible to uphold the virtues, the principles and philosophies for which the award was bestowed on me today. 

“I am happy and for the girl child and every other African child, it is important to note that education remains the only solution to the problems of Africa and it is through education that the breakthrough we're yearning for will truly.”

Hon. Agbese then appreciated Weldios University for the award. 

As thoroughbred Civil Society Activist by antecedence he been associated with impactful organizations, serving at the Centre for Social Justice, Equity, and Transparency from 2012 to 2015; Principal Partner at Preventive Diplomacy in Geneva, Switzerland; contributing immensely to conflict resolution efforts. 

He established Global Amnesty Watch in London in 2015 and subsequently founded The Nigerian News Group, a media organization, in 2016. 

His influence extends to the realm of literature, with his contributions as an author of numerous books and articles, both locally and internationally. 

So far, his Legislative Agenda have reflected his core strengths and interests emphasizing Defence, National Security, Education, Human Rights, Communication, and Sustainable Development Goals. 

As one of the youngest parliamentarians in

history, he committed to championing youth interests and concerns. 

Beyond politics, Agbese is known for his philanthropic endeavors, particularly in his constituency and the North Central region. 

His contributions have earned him the traditional title of Okanga Agila in his homeland, in Benue State.

Restore Edo Initiative Announces Awareness-creating Platform

 

Restore Edo Initiative has unveiled a platform to consistently showcase the potential of Edo State.

The Initiative, in a statement issued on Friday, announced that the platform was dedicated to "creating awareness about the vast economic potential of Edo State."

It said that it was focusing on fostering development and growth, even as it called on stakeholders at home and abroad to "tap into the abundant resources that Edo offers, in order to build the Edo of our forefathers' dreams."

The Iniative said it held a strong opinion that "Edo's underdeveloped state is founded in the actions and inactions of its elected leaders."

The Initiative further stated: "As a cardinal function of the project, we intend to investigate, analyze and evaluate the performances of past Edo leaders.

"This, we believe strongly, can reposition the minds of Edo citizens to choose their leaders more carefully and dedicatedly in the interest of restoring Edo to its deserved status among her peers."

According to the Initiative, "Edo State, located in the heart of Nigeria, is a vibrant region with a rich cultural heritage and a history that dates back centuries.

Joint Northern Action Groups Reject Fictitious Call for the Sack of Kyari, Zahra, Wunti

 

The Joint Northern Action Groups has rejected what they described as fictitious call for the sack of the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kolo Kyari. 

They also rejected the call for the suspension of the Executive Vice President (Upstream), Adokye Tombomieye, the Managing Director, Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) Ali Muhammed Zahra and Managing Director, and National Petroleum Investment Management Services and Bala Wunti. 

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, the Spokesperson of the groups, Comrade Abdulhameed Enaji, noted that they were challenging “the dubious protest staged in Abuja by some fictitious groups calling for the sack and probe of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).” 

They stated that “the obscure groups Northern Youth Advocacy for Good Governance Initiative and Arewa Youth Forum also called on the federal government to suspend the Executive Vice President (Upstream), Adokye Tombomieye, the Managing Director, Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) Ali Muhammed Zahra and Managing Director, National Petroleum Investment Management Services and Bala Wunti. 

“We note with deep concern the ongoing campaign by sponsored groups of individuals masquerading as members of fictitious Northern Nigerian Youth groups calling for the removal of Mele Kyari as the Group Chief Executive of NNPCL. 

“We are however happy that most discerning Nigerians and of course, the Federal Government appear to dismiss the protest as it was orchestrated by individuals who were only interested in advancing their own selfish interests, and not the collective good of Nigerians”, the groups said. 

According to the Joint Northern Action Groups, “By now everyone, but chronic detractors, must be aware that NNPCL under the leadership of Mele Kyari has recorded enormous achievements in the oil sector. 

“These achievements have been beneficial to Nigerians and have propelled the Nigerian economy forward.

One major achievement is the reduction of environmental pollution. 

“NNPCL has put strategic measures in place to ensure that the environment is safeguarded and preserved. As a result, the levels of pollution have drastically reduced which has made the environment safer for Nigerians. 

“Another significant achievement recorded by NNPCL is the absence of black soot over Port Harcourt in recent times. This is a result of NNPCL's commitment to environmental safety which has resulted in cleaner air for the people of Port Harcourt.

“Foreign ships coming to steal crude oil from Nigeria waters have been drastically reduced following the stringent measures put in place by NNPCL under Mele Kyari. This has resulted in a significant drop in illegal crude oil sales and has helped the Nigerian Government in generating more revenue. 

“Furthermore, Nigeria's crude oil production has gone up under the leadership of Mele Kyari which has seen Nigeria regain its spot as Africa's top crude oil producer from Angola. This has been beneficial to Nigerians as it has helped in boosting the Nigerian economy and increasing foreign reserves. 

“Additionally, Nigeria's foreign reserves are growing as a result of the income generated from crude oil sales. This has helped attract more investment to the oil sector, which has resulted in renewed investment in the Nigerian oil sector. 

“The creation of jobs by Tantita, a subsidiary of NNPCL, has helped reduce the attacks on pipelines by militants and improved the security of oil installations in Nigeria. 

“NNPCL under Mele Kyari has shown great performance and service delivery in the oil sector and is committed to continually safeguarding the environment and providing Nigerians with quality service delivery. 

“Under the leadership of Mele Kyari, NNPCL has achieved significant accomplishments. These include generating revenue through the award of oil pipeline surveillance and security to Tantita, which has helped every state in Nigeria. 

“Prior to this contract, Nigeria's production had fallen to its lowest in 40 years, forcing the country to borrow with no hope of repaying. However, NNPCL recently announced that production has reached 1.6m barrels again. 

“Another achievement is improving national security and territorial integrity. The Niger Delta was once becoming ungoverned because of oil thieves bringing vessels at any time. This was a threat to Nigeria's territorial integrity. 

“NNPCL has contributed to reducing pollution and its subsequent social impact. It's essential to protect the environment as it's the single greatest resource of any society. Any destruction can lead to social crises. 

“Under his watch, the NNPCL has made significant strides in the development of the Nigerian petroleum industry. We call on him to continue to do his best in the interest of Nigerians. 

“We would like to state categorically that this so-called protest is the handiwork of selfish individuals who are only interested in advancing their own interests, and not the interests of Nigerians. We reject these individuals in their entirety and call on all Nigerians to disregard their call for the sack of Mele Kyari. 

“As patriotic Nigerians we also commend outstanding leadership of NNPCL and call on him to continue to do his best in driving the growth and development of the Nigerian petroleum industry. 

“We call on Nigerians to remain vigilant and reject any attempt by selfish individuals to use the guise of civil society to advance their own interests”, the groups stated.

All we want is justice that is rooted in truth, justice that is based on what really transpired on the day of election when INEC changed the goal post in the middle of the match, Mahmood Yakubu Promised Nigerians realtime transmission of election results from polling units using the BVAS to capture and transmit the results to the IREV portal in order to eliminate fraud and uphold the integrity of our electoral process and INEC failed woefully to ensure that the election results were accurate and consistent with their promises.

The independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) claimed the commission’s failure was as a result of the glitched is suffered during the cause of the election but as a public institution that should be accountable to the people, it never gave full disclosure of the nature, cause or the extend of the glitches that occurred.

The electoral act gave INEC powers to determine the methods of transmission of the election results and INEC officially recognized the dual transmission and accreditation system where in addition to the paper trail they were required to use the BVAS and IREV as stipulated in their own written manual for the conduct of 2023 General Elections.

The failure of INEC to adhere to his own established principles of engagement in itself was a major setback for the country’s drive towards democracy and electoral integrity.

"Now you're talking", South-South Youth hails Tinubu for nominating Matawalle as Minister

The South-South Youth Solidarity Group has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for including the former Zamfara State Governor, Bello Muhammad Matawalle in the second ministerial nomination list, describing it as the wisest choice.

Northern Elders Forum Distances Self From Hakeem Baba-Ahmed's 'Advise To Tinubu Administration'

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has dissociated its from a publication credited to Dr Hakeem Baba Ahmed, the Director of Publicity of the NEF, titled, "Advise To The Tinubu Administration" and dated 31 July 2023. 

The group distanced itself from the publication and all its

ramifications in a statement signed by the Director General of the NEF, Prof. Doknan DD Sheni, OON. 

Consequently, the NEF categorically stated that the said “write up and the contents were not the views of the Directors of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), and therefore does not represent the views of NEF on the Administration.”

The statement reads: 

“The attention of the directorate of Northern Elders Forum (NEF has been drawn to a publication credited to Dr Hakeem Baba Ahmed, Director of Publicity, titled "Advise To The Tinubu Administration" dated 31 July 2023.

Subsidy Removal: Don't Trust Labour Unions, Take Your Destiny In Your Hands — CNPP Tells Nigerians

 

Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has urged the Nigerians to take their destiny into their hands rather than trust the Nigerian Labour unions to lead them against the incessant increment in pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise known as petrol since 2015. 

The umbrella association of all the registered political parties and political associations in the country in a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, James Ezema, noted that the labour movement cannot be trusted. 

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliates is planning a nationwide strike scheduled to begin on Wednesday to protest the hardship occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal. 

However, the CNPP noted that “It is unfortunate, but true, that the labour movement in Nigeria has consistently failed to defend the masses who constitute majority among their membership. 

“Nigerians in the past have had their hopes dashed each time the labour unions led negotiations with government on their behalf on any issues bordering on their well-being or pains. 

“The CNPP believes that only the Nigerian masses who bear the brunt of economic hardships as well as the increasing pains of long the long years bad leadership that can decide their own faith by taking their destiny into their hands. 

“Like they have done each time they claimed to stand up for the masses, the labour unions will certainly betray the trust of the working class”,the statement said.

Legal Practitioner Accuses Ogun SSG of Money Laundering, Ballot Paper Printing Scam

 

A legal practitioner, Femi Oniyide, has submitted a petition to both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against the Secretary to the Ogun State Government (SSG), Tokunbo Talabi.

In the petition, Talabi is alleged to have engaged in money laundering and illicit activities linked to the printing of ballot papers for the last general elections.

At a press briefing held in Abeokuta, Monday, Oniyide publicly presented and signed the petition, expressing his concerns to the moral justification for a concern party in the last general elections getting contract from INEC to print ballot papers.

He revealed that Talabi purportedly laundered a sum of N189,797,163.9 in 2020 through a company account named Superflux International Ltd, which he held with Access Bank Plc and linked to Talabi's BVN.

According to Oliyide, the amounts with payment description; "INEC Electoral amount....4 55 of BALLOT P" were meant for the supply of ballot papers by the company under the financial grip of the SSG to INEC.

The legal practitioner further claimed that these payments were divided into four tranches, each amounting to N47,449,290.90, all processed on the 19th of June 2020.

Oniyide also made a separate allegation that an amount exceeding N10,800,000.00, initially designated for Covid-19 funds, was discovered in Superflux International Ltd's account in 2020. 

He asserted that this amount was allegedly paid into the SSG's company account on two occasions, totaling N21,600,000:00.

"I have come to the knowledge, through different stories Online, that Superflux International Ltd, sometime in 2020, took lodgement of various sums of money from the Central Bank of Nigeria account of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC for the printing of ballot papers meant for elections in Nigeria.

"The alleged payments were supposedly made in four tranches on the 19th of June, 2020, for N47,449,290.90 per each transaction, totalling W189,797,163.9 Only. The amount, according to the description of payment was meant for "INEC Electoral amount....4 55 of BALLOT P.

"Of another major importance in this petition is the alleged discovery of COVID 19 funds in the account of the same Superflux International Ltd, which has the financial control imprimatur of the SSG to Ogun State government. 

"The sum of N10,800,000:00 was allegedly discovered to have been paid twice into the SSG's company account twice, totalling W21,600,000:00 Naira on the 4th of February, 2020 of which there was an onward transfer to Zimanel Global Enterprises with the description, "Covid 19 food support", he added.

He however implored the Chairman of EFCC and ICPC to cause detailed investigation into the circumstances of "how Ogun State taxpayers funds will be so brazenly managed and laundered by a private company owned by a political appointee and his family".

When contacted, the SSG promised to call our correspondent back, which he never did as at the time of filing this report.

CNPP, CSOs Want INEC Chairman Yakubu To Step Aside Within 14 Days Or ...

 

Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) and civil society organisations (CSOs) under the aegis of the Coalition Of National Civil Society Organisations (CNCSOs) have demanded that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu resign from office. 

The CNPP and the CSOs issued a 14-day ultimatum to Prof. Yakubu to step aside or they will galvanised all democratic and legal means to force him to do so. 

In a statement jointly signed by the CNPP Secretary General, Chief Willy Ezugwu and the National Secretary of the Coalition, Alhaji Ali Abacha, they explained that the INEC Chairman, who failed to deploy the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) it procured “despite billions of naira wasted on the 2023 general elections is not worthy of remaining in office and must not be allowed to continue to waste the nation's resources in conduct of future elections.” 

According to the statement issued in Abuja, the CNPP and the CSOs said that they are equally disturbed that “INEC under Prof. Yakubu has equally constituted itself into an obstruction to justice in the electioneering process in Nigeria by becoming a partisan umpire and opposing petitioners who are in the various tribunals to seek justice after being allegedly rigged out in the elections.” 

They also accused the INEC Chairman of inflating about N105.25 billion spent on acquiring BVAS machines for the 2023 polls, saying that “despite having been severally accused of manipulating the February 25 presidential election results, counsel to INEC, Abubakar Mahmoud, recently aligned with the position of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 25 presidential election to object to the presentation of subpoenaed witnesses who were INEC ad-hoc staff during the 2023 presidential election in the petition filed by Atiku Abubakar and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). 

“We recall that at the resumption of proceedings on Atiku’s petition last Thursday in Abuja, one of the witnesses, Egwuma Friday from Kubwa area of Abuja entered the witness box and prayed the court to admit his witness statement, but all respondents in the petition, including INEC, raised objections to stop the witness from testifying. 

“This is the same INEC that has been accused of manipulating election results by deliberately refusing to transmit polling units results as promised real-time. 

“From mere allegations, a staff of INEC, Abedemi Joseph on Friday told the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) that they were instructed by the commission under Prof. Yakubu, their employer, not to give copies of election results to political party agents who declined to sign the results. 

“It's now becoming more obvious that, until INEC Chairman exited from the commission, rebuilding confidence in the electoral body will be impossible due to the now battered image of the commission in the eyes of the electorates. 

“More so, INEC under Prof. Yakubu took four years to mislead Nigerians by creating false impression that uploading of the election results to the BVAS real-time was the only way to go for the country’s electoral system. 

“Contrary to expectations, INEC made it impossible for electoral officers to upload the results of the presidential election real-time from the polling units, which may have created room for the upload of manipulated election results. 

“We note that the former Minister of Transportation and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, had revealed that a member of the camp of the presidential candidate of his party, now President Bola Tinubu, nominated the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Yakubu, for his reappointment for a second term. 

“In the words of Amaechi, 'There are those of us who opposed the reappointment of Yakubu Mahmood. The person who nominated him is a member of Tinubu’s camp. So what are you expecting?' 

“So, how can anyone convince Nigerians that such a character remain in office as INEC Chairman for a single day, not to even think of allowing him to conduct another election in the country? 

“We equally call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), other anti-graft agencies, as well as the Department Of State Services (DSS) to immediately commence investigation of INEC’s N105.25 billion budgetted for acquiring 200,000 units of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) as the budget has been found to have surpassed the estimated market cost by a whopping 30.4 percent, yet Nigeria lost the anticipated benefits, and for constituting himself into a national security risk as his continued stay in office could trigger violence in the country. 

“According our findings as corroborated by the media, the BVAS machines, which were deploy during the now controversial 2023 general elections, EMP2920 Biometric tablets, were manufactured and supplied by Shenzhen Emperor Technology at an inflated unit cost of $795 (N366,089.55 at the rate of N460.47/$) as against the Amazon price, where the device sells under a different name SecuMind Tablet Biometric CX2920. 

“Why should the INEC Chairman remain in office after wasting 34.51 percent of the total sum of N355 billion budgeted for the 2023 polls on the procurement of biometric devices that never worked? 

“In a sane clime, such an official who failed woefully to conduct an acceptable general elections after receiving all he asked for should have long resigned. 

“We, therefore, demand the immediate resignation of the INEC Chairman within 14 days. 

“At the expiration of the ultimatum, all democratic and legal means possible would be deployed to force him to quit the office. 

“All the CNPP organs at the state level and the civil society groups under the CNCSOs across the country are being mobilised for appropriate action in event that Prof. Yakubu remains in office after two weeks from today. 

“It is on record that the CNPP and the CSOs fully backed INEC in the build up to the 2023 general elections and insisted that all that the commission required should be made available to it since INEC Chairman had assured of conducting a free, fair and credible elections. 

“The same promise to do what is right was made by the INEC Chairman at the CHATHAM House before the elections and today, the world is seeing Nigeria as a mockery among the comity of nations, especially with the testimonies emanating from the election petition courts where INEC staff are indicting the commission under Prof. Yakubu. 

“Therefore, if the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, who followed the instructions of former President Muhammadu Buhari to redesign the naira to ensure that illicit funds were not deployed for 2023 elections, could be ordered to step aside from office, why should Prof. Yakubu, who has done more harm to the psyche of Nigerian electorates than any past Chairman of the commission in Nigeria’s history, remain in office? 

“Prof Yakubu dashed the hopes Nigerians in a credible 2023 electoral system, raising voter apathy to the highest level in the country, and for us, it's time up for Prof Mahmood Yakubu to quit the stage as INEC Chairman. Enough is enough”, the statement concluded.

NASS Leadership: Southwest Frontiers Cautions Tinubu Against Early Confrontation With North

 

The South-West Frontiers has expressed worry over the concerns that a section of those who call themselves supporters of the President Bola Tinubu is scheming the illegal arrest of some prominent aspirants for the House of Representatives Speaker and the Senate Presidency such as the former Zamfara Governor, Abdulaziz Yari who is seeking the Senate President position. 

A strong-worded statement signed by the Frontiers chairman, Kolawale Adediji Kazeem described the move as provocative, unwarranted and unsolicited attempt to shade the Tinubu Presidency in bad light and cause rifts between the Northern political allies of the South-West. 

“We observe the deliberate attempt by some desperate politicians to drag the President into their self-serving battle by making it appear like his own war, which in reality, is not.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the South-West would not tolerate any move for the sake of some few people's ego, that would drag the South-West presidency into collision with any of its friends, especially the North. 

“We therefore warn all those who see it as their duty to cause rifts between our president, a universally renown cosmopolitan democrat into the dirty mud of their dubious agenda to desist as we are amply ready to protect our president at any cost.

“To our dear president, we restate confidence in his ability and capacity to cope with whichever leadership the legislature presents for the good of the country. 

“We therefore call on him to beware of bad company around him and to resist any temptation to get him to act outside the constitution and undemocratic.

Nigeria's Coalition of Northern Groups Slams $7 Billion Petrol Subsidy Expenditure as Source of Corruption

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has criticized the Nigerian government for spending $7 billion on petrol subsidies from January to September 2022, which has contributed to the country's economic downturn. The organization mentioned the $15.6 billion subsidization, which accounts for more than half of the federal government's budget for half a year, could have been used to fund numerous crucial public projects.

According to data presented by the CNG, the $15.6 billion petrol subsidy could have funded the $2 billion Siemens power deal, as well as $2.3 billion Lagos-Kano rail, $11 billion Lagos-Calabar rail, $3 billion Port-Hercourt-Maiduguri rail, $9 billion Wembley Stadiums, $3.8 billion AKk Gas Project, and $5.3 billion NLNG T7 Project.

The CNG emphasized that the subsidy's expenditures amounted to N580 billion in January 2023, which exceeds the combined yearly budget of the states of Anambra and Kaduna and the combined yearly budgets of the Ministries of Defense, Education, and Health. 

The CNG described the subsidy as a "source of corruption." This subsidy, according to the organization, has mainly benefited a few wealthy households at the expense of the majority.

Despite the calls to end or curtail the subsidy, previous Nigerian administrations have been unable to do so. The CNG urged the Nigerian government to use the savings to finance public works and suggested the need to reactivate the refineries and speed up the Kolmari Bauchi/Gombe states' exploration of new oil reserves.

CNG convened a one-day roundtable on June 6 in Kaduna, bringing together its 150 affiliates and other northern interest groups, to discuss Nigeria's state.

The CNG also urged the member of the Nigerian public not to be deceived by “the ruthless cartel that has been impoverishing the nation while pocketing the subsidy proceeds for their personal benefits and those of their immediate families.”

The organization highlighted the need for the Nigerian government to introduce social cushioning and protection measures before removing the subsidy. The group calls on the Tinubu administration to investigate the fuel market chain and deal with smuggling, hoarding, and subsidy fraud.

The CNG accused the Nigeria Labour Congress of betrayal and of acting in the interests of its members alone. The organization stated that Labor has repeatedly retreated from serious national issues, rendered the fight powerless, and consequently demands that the group make amends.

The CNG encouraged the public to be vigilant, calm, and focused while demanding protection of their collective rights to Nigeria's resources. The coalition reminded the citizens that the petroleum resources are a natural endowment and that all Nigerians are entitled to the benefits that accrue from it.

Niger Delta Groups Carpet Independent Marketers Over Pomp Price Increment, Urge FG To Review Petrol Price

 

Niger Delta Groups, including the Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC), South-South Movement for Good Governance (SMG), the Urhobo Progressive Vanguard (UPV), Niger Delta Women for Change (NDWC), Cross River Youth Democratic Front (CRYDF), and 13 other groups, have expressed deep concern over what they described as “the recurring pattern of deception orchestrated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in matters of critical national importance.” 

In a joint statement issued by the leaders of the over 17 groups, they carpeted the independent oil marketers over immediate hiked in pump prices of petrol as soon as the subsidy removal was announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu “in order to sabotage the sincere efforts of the government.” 

Those who signed the statement include Comrade Israel Uwejeyan, the National Coordinator of the Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC); Barr. Raymond Oporomo, the National President of South-South Movement for Good Governance; Comrade Efemena Esamagu, the President of Urhobo Progressive Vanguard; Mrs. Abigail Asibie, the National Coordinator of Niger Delta Women for Change; Comrade Julius Emaluji, the National President of the Cross River Youth Democratic Front, among others. 

The groups keenly observed that “on numerous occasions, the NLC has deceived the public by creating an illusion of safeguarding their welfare, only to betray their trust by engaging in backdoor negotiations with the government, ultimately disregarding the plight of the suffering masses.” 

Cautioning labour unions over their planned strike action against the removal of subsidy on petrol, the organisations said, “We emphatically caution the NLC that it can no longer deceive anyone after having stripped itself of credibility, public trust, and confidence. 

“We urges Nigerians to be vigilant and reject the NLC's attempts to drag them into a situation with uncertain outcomes it. We urge our compatriots not to fall for the gimmicks employed by the NLC, who seem to be taking advantage of the suffering of the masses for their selfish negotiations.

“The NLC must first and foremost provide a comprehensive explanation regarding its absence during the preparation, presentation, defense, and passage of the budget by the former President Muhammadu Buhari's government and the 9th National Assembly, which did not include provisions for subsidy. 

“It is disheartening to witness opportunistic actions being taken by the NLC only when it suits their agenda, rather than consistently advocating for the welfare of Nigerians”. 

The groups called on Nigerians to hold the “independent oil marketers accountable for the drastic deterioration of petroleum prices, we vehemently condemn these acts of extortion by the independent marketers who hiked pump prices as soon as the subsidy removal was announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in order to sabotage the sincere efforts of the government. 

“This inhumane act of wickedness and greed demonstrates a lack of regard for the already burdensome living conditions faced by the Nigerian people.

“Moreover, we are not ignorant of the fact that the removal of fuel subsidies has placed an additional financial burden on the Nigerian populace, particularly the most vulnerable segments of society. 

“The sudden increase in fuel prices has had a ripple effect on the cost of transportation, food, and other essential commodities, further exacerbating the hardships faced by the people. 

“Therefore, we urge the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to critically review the fuel price template provided by the NNPCL. By reducing the fuel price template, the government will be lessening the financial burden on the masses”.

In addition to addressing the immediate concern of the fuel price template, the group called on President Bola Tinubu “to prioritize finding a lasting solution to the inherited issues plaguing the petroleum sector. One crucial aspect that demands urgent attention is the state of the existing refineries. 

“The continuous reliance on imported petroleum products has not only proven to be economically unsustainable but also undermines our national energy security.

“We implore President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to proffer a comprehensive and sustainable plan to revamp and rehabilitate the existing refineries within the coming months. 

“This measure will not only reduce our dependence on imported petroleum products but also create job opportunities, foster local content development, and ultimately contribute to the economic growth and development of our nation.

“We urge all stakeholders to work together to build a nation where the welfare of the people is paramount and where the actions of all stakeholders align with the collective goal of a prosperous Nigeria”, they concluded.
