The National Industrial Court ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end its seven-month strike on Wednesday.
Recall that ASUU went on strike on February 14 due to the government's failure to meet its demands, which included funding for tertiary institutions and a review of lecturers' salaries and allowances.
However, months after the strike, the federal government, through its counsel, James Igwe, asked the industrial court for an interlocutory injunction preventing ASUU from taking any further action regarding the strike, pending the outcome of the substantive suit.
On Wednesday, September 21, Justice Polycap Hamman issued an order suspending the strike.
The judge invoked Section 18 of the Trade Dispute Act and stated that he was acting in his official capacity.
He also stated that granting the Federal Government's request was in the national interest of Nigerian students.
This comes after ASUU's National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, warned that a court-ordered return to the classroom would destroy the education sector.
